Most swim trunks have an inner mesh lining, also called netting. This is how swim trunks was made form the beginning and most swim trunks still comes with the inner mesh lining. However, as long as there have been mesh lining there has also been a fierce debate among guys if they prefer their swim trunks with or without mesh lining.
The debate of wether it is best with or without mesh lining is the topic for another blog post. In this article we will dive deeper into the question of what is mesh lining and what does mesh lining do?
Mesh lining (or netting) is a fine mesh inside swim trunks that offers comfort, allows for air to circulate freely and carries moist and water. The mesh lining is made often made from polyester. The unique way that the mesh is woven gives it great features such as four way stretch, ventilation capability and it dries quickly.
Do all swim trunks have mesh lining? No, not all swim trunks have mesh lining. However, most regular swim trunks today have an inner mesh lining.
What is the purpose of mesh lining inside swim trunks?
The inner lining in swim trunks is there as support and for additional comfort for mens softer parts. The fabric of swim shorts can often be rough and itchy, this is something you don’t want and especially not around the crutch. To avoid this many swim shorts have have an inner mesh lining often made from softer polyester.
Many guys appreciate the lining since they don’t wear regular underwear with their swim trunks. However there are also guys that really doesn’t like this and just feels like it makes things worse. If you like lining or not is a personal preference and you’ll simply have to try a few pair for yourself to see what you like. But don’t just try them at the store. You’ll have to get wet as well to feel the difference.
Why is there mesh lining in swim trunks?
The inner mesh acts as a climate control for your crutch. The lining is usually made from polester and is filled with holes, making it very light weight. This enables moist to pass freely away from your skin since the air can flow right through. The mesh also acts as a separation between the outer fabric of the shorts and your skin while still offering the supports many men wants in a pair of swim shorts. The lightweight material of the lining also allows for faster drying of the swim shorts.
Do swim shorts need netting?
Well the easy answer is, no. Today there are many swim trunks, mainly board shorts that doesn’t have netting inside. On the other hand, a lot of men would say that there needs to be a mesh lining for extra comfort or the shorts simply is unwearable. As you’ll see in this post there are both pros and cons with the mesh lining.

Why don’t board shorts have liner?
Let’s first make this clear, board shorts are meant for surfing. We know, today a lot of guys wears them as regular swim trunks and even as regular shorts during the day. But board shorts are made for, you guessed it, the board. That also the reason why board shorts doesn’t have any mesh lining.
When surfing you don’t want any extra fabric. But you are also moving a lot. So you don’t want the lining to be in the way or to hold you back. The mesh lining is meant for extra comfort and keeping things in place. But that works best when just playing in the pool or playing volleyball at the beach. When you are jumping up and down on the board the mesh have the opposite effect and are often in the way.
What to wear under board shorts without liner?
How to wear board shorts with our liner?
As we’ve talked about before, board shorts could come with a mesh lining inside or unlined. However, most board shorts do not have any lining at all. So right now we’re assuming your board shorts doesn’t have any lining. Then the questions is, what to wear under board shorts?
There are several options you can go with. All have their pros and cons. We’ll go through the most common ways to wear board shorts and talk about some positives and some negatives with all options. Then you’ll make your own decision.

Wear nothing under your board shorts
The first and maybe most obvious way is to just wear nothing at all under your board shorts. The pros with going this way is that it’s easy and convenient. Also this way your board shorts will dry the fastest. If you wear a good pair of shorts that fit properly you won’t have any problems with itching, rashes or things hanging to loose.
The inner mesh was first made for extra comfort and keeping things in place, especially when surfing. However, these days a good pair of swim shorts without lining will be just as comfortable as your favorite pair of underwear.
The potential downside of not wearing anything under your unlined shorts is that if your shorts aren’t great in quality or fit you might experience some uncomfort. If you’r going commando make sure your trunks fit well both then wet and dry. Another risk is if your board shorts are of lighter material and in a brighter color. This might make them a little see-through when wet. If this is the case and they are a tighter fit it will leave very little to the imagination once you get up from the water. Make sure you’re tested your board shorts in water so you know if they will be see-through or not. This could avoid an awkward situation at the next pool party.
If you don’t feel like going full commando there are a range of options to wear under board shorts and we’ll go over a few below
Wear boxers under under board shorts
If your board shorts doesn’t have a lining inside the most common is to just wear your boxers underneath. The benefit of doing this is obviously that it’s vey comfortable and feel like you’r wearing a regular pair of shorts. But this might not last very long. Your favorite boxers might feel great while dry, but not so comfy while wet. Take this in consideration when choosing what to wear under your board shorts.
Also, your cotton boxers are not made for water. They’ll get soaked and lose their comfort quickly and while swim shorts are made for the pool and ocean your boxers are not. The salt and chlorine in the water will take its toll on them. The waistband will lost its flexibility and they’ll most likely lose some color. So be careful if you’re using your favorite pair.
Another thing to keep in mind when wearing boxers under board shorts is the dry time. Your swim shorts might be made of quick dry material but your boxers most certainly isn’t. They will take hours to dry and you’ll go wet until it’s time to get back in the water.
The comfort of wearing boxers underneath is obviously a huge positive. But this might quickly turn into a negative when getting wet, and isn’t that why you had on swim trunks from the start?
Wear compression shorts under board shorts
Another option to wear under your board shorts is compression shorts. These shorts are really for working out and have several benefits in this area. But they also work well as underwear for board shorts. Compression shorts fits tight on your legs and are often longer than usual underwear. The main advantage of using them are that they add a lot of comfort compared to wearing nothing at all and they dries faster than your cotton boxers. Since compression shorts usually are on the longer side, make sure they’re not longer than your board shorts. This just doesn’t look very good.
Wear briefs under board shorts
Let last option we’re gonna touch on is wearing swim briefs under board shorts, or as they are commonly known Speedos. Swimming briefs are usually worn for competitive swimming or people on the beach that are working on removing their tan line. However, they turn out to be a great option under you board shorts. While they don’t offer the same support as a pair of compression shorts or boxers they sure adds a little comfort and at least keeps things in place. Briefs also dries quicker than both compression shorts and boxers.
The easy answer is, yes you can cut the mesh lining from your swim trunks. However, there are a few things to consider before doing so.
First off, even if you are a person who prefers shorts without netting inside and you have a pair that feels great without net so might not be the case if they have a lining to begin with. They are then made with the intent that the mesh lining shoe add the softness and comfort. If you cut it out the shorts might not be so comfortable.
Also, remember what we talked about before, if your shorts are thin they might leave very little to the imagination if you cut the lining out.
Then there are the pockets. Are they integrated with the mesh lining? Well then you probably should just leave it to not lose the pockets and have 2 holes on the side, maybe consider buying another pair from the beginning.
Lastly, you can’t really put the netting back. We therefore recommend you think about it twice before cutting the mesh lining out of your swim shorts or trunks. There are so many great options when it comes to swim shorts that you should really be able to find a pair you like from the beginning to avoid cutting anything out.
We’ve talked about compression shorts that you could wear underneath board shorts that doesn’t have the inner lining. But nowadays there are board shorts that instead of mesh lining have a compression liner. This gives the same benefits as wearing compression shorts but this way they are built in to the swim shorts. And if you remember, compression shorts wasn’t made for swimming in the first place. But the compression lining is made to be the right fit, length and material for swimming.
